Samsung announce super fast SM951 flash storage: Fastest ever SSD to hit the market

Samsung SM951 SSD PCI-E 3.0 fastest ever

The new, super fast, Samsung SM951 PCIe SSD is now in mass production. The drive is designed with laptops/MacBooks in mind, but with an adapter it will also be right at home in a Mac Pro 5,1. The SM951 will reach speeds of up to 1,600MB/s read and 1,350MB/s write when installed on a PCIe 2 slot, as found in the Mac Pro 5,1. On PCIe 3 speeds are even more impressive.
According to Samsung, the drive is also incredibly efficient. Apparently 50% more efficient than it’s predecessor, the XP941. The SM951 also supports the new L1.2 low power standby mode, this will reduce power consumption in sleep or hibernate mode by 97%, from 50mW to under 2mW.
Capacity options include 512GB, 256GB & 128GB.
No word on pricing yet but we’ll probably see this drives appear in laptops before the consumers can get their hands on them directly.
