Nvidia’s Latest Graphics Card, the GTX 980 Ti 6GB, meets the Mac Pro 5,1
It’s here, the one people have been waiting for, the Nvidia GTX 980 Ti 6GB with Mac EFI. We wont pull any punches here, this GPU is an absolute monster. Although it shares it’s name with the 4GB GTX 980, it’s actually more like a GTX TITAN X with half the VRAM.
This is the second GPU in Nvidia’s GTX 9XX series that we will be offering with a Mac EFI as part of our custom Mac Pro 5,1 systems, and if we’re honest, it’s the one we’ve been most excited about bringing to the table. This card is just unbelievable, it’s performance is only marginally lower than the GTX TITAN X 12GB, which is the most powerful single GPU we have ever seen.
For example, in CUDA tests such as Octane Render’s OctaneBench, the Nvidia GTX 980 Ti 6GB scores only 4% lower than the flagship GTX TITAN X 12GB GPU. When it comes to OpenCL the GTX 980 Ti 6GB actually scores higher than the GTX TITAN X 12GB in benchmark tests, about 3% higher, with a massive score of 3,232 in the Luxmark Sala test (see screenshot below).
Needless to say, we are hugely impressed by the Nvidia GTX 980 Ti 6GB’s performance in the Mac Pro. For anyone doing visual work, who doesn’t need the marginally better CUDA performance of the GTX TITAN X 12GB, the 980 Ti is surely the ultimate Mac Pro GPU. You can now configure Mac Pro systems with the 980 Ti over on our ‘Configure Your Mac Pro’ page, as well as order them separately by emailing us on email@example.com.
